Description

Like all of our kits the Frugel horn Lite kit speakers have been fully CNC machined from 18 mm Baltic Birch Ply to provide an accurate and repeatable method for anyone to build this pair of DIY full range loud speakers.

This easy to build kit comes with all the panels needed to build a pair of Frugel Horn Lite speakers, all you’ll have to do is add glue to the slots in the large side panels and push the panels together. Following the component selection steps here you can add all the extra’s that you will need to complete your build. The front baffles will be cut for the driver you have selected, we can also cut your baffles for one of the other drivers that are known to work well with the Frugel Horn that we don’t sell here for a small charge.

The range of Frugel Horns make use of a tappered hypex horn with internal choke, after Olson, with the judicious use of damping allows for tuning to the room (& placement in the room), as well as your taste in bass quantity and tuning.

Scott Lindgren gets credit for the design of the current horns, Ron Clarke deserves mention for coming up with the curved mouth which allows a rectangular mouth to act more like an ideal circle, David Dlugos for drawings & web-site, Chris Bobiak for producing the original prototypes. The home of the Frugel Horn is over at the Frugal-Horn website The plans for the Frugel Horn Lite are available from that site if you decide to go it alone rather than use one of our FH Lite flat pack speaker cabinet kits. It is in the spirit of the Frugal phile project for you to give donation to DIYaudio.com before you use the plans, and you can find details about that on the Frugal Horn website.

This pair of kit speakers have been full CNC machined from 18 mm Baltic Birch Ply to provide an accurate and repeatable method for anyone to build this pair of DIY full range loud speakers.

Take a look over at our instruction page for this design to see how simple it is to put it  together, the instructions are specific to our Frugel horn XL kit but the method is the same for the Frugel horn Lite speaker kit as well

Designed to work with 2.5 inch drivers, the Frugel Horn Lite is compatible with the Markaudio Alpair 5.3 and MAOP 5 drivers.

  1. Robert Seymour

I contacted Stefan about making up the Frugelhorn Lite kit, after seeing his excellent range in CNC cut kits for the other Frugelhorn models.
I already had a pair of drivers waiting for the project, and Stefan was more than willing to help me out with the other materials/components if I needed them.
The kit came well packed and the quality is excellent, no alterations needed and all the panels fit perfectly together.
Overall a really easy and satisfying build that can be assembled over a weekend.

Hi Robert, thanks so much for leaving a review. For those of you wanting to see Roberts excellent work putting these together so quickly you can see the photos of his build on the FrugelHorn Lite web page.

  2. Stephen Zarczynski

This was my first proper speaker build, found Stefan’s YouTube videos explaining the build very useful so decided to take the plunge with the Frugelhorn Lite collected the kit and had a nice chat with Stefan, managed to complete the build in a couple of days without any real difficulty, thanks again to Stefan for sending out the proper binding posts by return post as I’d bought ones that were too short. I left the drivers running in at low volume over the build time so they were a little loosened up prior to going in the cabs. Once installed my initial impressions are very positive, I think the cabinets design is a match made in heaven with the Alpair 5.3 drivers, openness and clarity across the Audio band is superb and there’s a surprising amount of bass depth and punch coupled with excellent transient speed, as they stand I have to class them in the excellent category, if they improve further with more break in hours they will be superlative, to say I’m very happy with them would be an understatement, these simply must be heard.
